Millenium Development

It is time to call it what it is: a development emergency which needs emergency action

Prime Minister Gordon Brown

What are the Millenium Development Goals?

The Global Millenium Goals (MDG’s) were developed by the UN in 2000, setting the major objectives on the global agenda to be achieved in the near future. These goals are:

• Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
• Achieve universal primary education
• Promote gender equality and empower women
• Reduce child mortality
• Improve maternal health
• Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases
• Ensure environmental sustainability
• Develop a global partnership for development.

UK’s Call for Action

16 EU member state, including the UK, have recognized and subscribed to these goals. The UK Government is commited to accelerating progress, in order to fulfill all the MDG’s before the set date of 2015.

For this purpose, it has initiated partnerships with members of the private sector, civil societies and faith groups. The UK has also joined eight international agencies working in health, a number of major donors and several partner countries to launch a new International Health Partnership.

The funds allocated by the UK Government for achieving the MDG’s are increasing. By 2010, the total budget of the Department for International Development (DFID) will rise to
7.9 billion, and Official Development Assistance is projected to reach 9.1 billion. DFID will spend 8.5 billion on education by 2015, and on health it will provide 1 billion by 2015 for the Global Fund for AIDS, TB and Malaria.
