Vilnius Schools‘ Rugby Competition (01/10/2009)
On 21 September, the British Ambassador was a guest of honour at the Vilnius Schools‘ Rugby Competition in Vingis Park, Vilnius.
Before the competition, the Ambassador congratulated the players and wished that this sport, which was invented in the United Kingdom would become more popular in Lithuania.
Six teams from Vilnius‘ schools as well astwo teams from Vilnius‘ universities took part in this competition. The teams were divided into two groups. The teams, who won their group or came second, went through to the semi-finals.
Many believe that the game of rugby originated in 1823 when a schoolboy calledWilliam Webb Ellis, picked up the ball during a game of football, ignoring the rules and ran with it. This historical event took place at Rugby School, which is situated in the Midlands area of the UK.
