International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer (16/09/2009)
In 1995, on 16 September each year is celebrated the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. This date has been designated by the United Nations General Assembly to commemorate the signing of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.
This commemoration around the world offers an opportunity to focus attention and action at the global, regional and national levels on the protection of the ozone layer.
The International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer comes some 80 days before the Copenhagen 2009 climate conference.
Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon in his messages on this International Day says: “By working together, the ozone and climate treaties can multiply their impact for sustainable development. Other benefits are likely to include improved energy efficiency in industrial and household processes and appliances, and spin-offs for the wider chemicals agenda, including in the areas of waste management and human health”.
